53 Degrees North - International Womens Day 2020

At 53 Degrees North, we are really happy to celebrate International Women’s day. We believe it’s an important day to honour women’s achievements.

We have some amazing women on our team at 53DN who love the outdoors and really inspire us, and in honour of International Women’s Day, we wanted to ask them some important questions, and also introduce them to you.

What does International Women’s day mean to you?

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and the sense of community amongst women, too.

Who are your female role models and why?

When I was a child I wanted to be just like the journalist Kate Adie - she was always in interesting places and was a strong, fearless voice in traditionally male spaces.

“If she can see it, she can be it” - it’s really important for girls (and boys!) to have role models and see that they have choices in life.

Why do we need international women’s day?

In Ireland we are lucky to live in an open society but there are still so many problems with everyday sexism and policies that sometimes inadvertently exclude women. We still have a long way to go to reach the kind of equality and representation that women need.

The 20x20 campaign has been great at highlighting what women have been doing for years in sport, but weren’t getting the equal visibility and kudos that sportsmen were receiving.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given by another woman?

Speak up and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s the only way you’ll learn.

Have you been on any adventures (home or abroad) with your female friends?

My friends and I travelled all day from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon and managed to just catch the sunset dropping over the canyon. A magical memory!

Do you think spending time outdoors is a good way to bond with your friends?

Definitely! Being outdoors offers great opportunities to chat in a relaxed atmosphere, when your hands are busy pitching a tent or climbing over a turnstile. You always feel a sense of achievement that you can share when you’ve reached a peak together or can finally rest your head in your own tent!

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

I would probably say completing my first triathlon. I’ve never been a great swimmer or cyclist, but I set myself a goal of completing a triathlon to push myself. I certainly did that! The feeling of crossing the line and seeing my sister there, cheering me on gave me an amazing feeling of elation and reminded me of what I had achieved. Sport and the outdoors are vital for my physical and mental health and I’m really lucky to work in a place that encourages everyone to get out there and enjoy the benefits of an outdoor life.

What does International Women’s day mean to you?

I think International Women’s Day is necessary to highlight and celebrate all our achievements to date and motivate us ladies to keep pushing for more.

Why do we need international women’s day?

Unfortunately, as women we are still discriminated against and International Women’s Day helps to highlight that. International Women’s Day helps educate and motivate everyone to challenge societal norms.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given by another woman?

The best advice I have been given by another woman was given by my mam. She has always told me to retain my financial independence. A man is not a financial plan.

Do you think spending time outdoors is a good way to bond with your friends?

I think spending time outdoors is the best way to bond with friends! My ideal would be a warm, sunny day spent hiking with friends. Fresh air, enjoying the scenery and chats is all you need!

What’s the best advice you have ever been given by another woman?

"You would never criticise a loved one the way you do yourself. There'll be plenty of people who will want to tear you down; don't give them any help."

Do you think spending time outdoors is a good way to bond with your friends?

Definitely! Once a year, a group of us will meet up and go camping for a weekend. It's a great way to catch up with the friends you may not see as often as you want to, and being out in the fresh air does wonders!

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

Hiking the Swiss Alps when I was 16. One of my favourite holidays to date!

For me, International Women’s Day means supporting other women and not tearing them down, being proud to be a part of society as a women and not to look down on other women.

We need international women's day to celebrate all things to help motive and build up women's self-esteem in a positive way.
