PEAK 3: Mweelrea

The 3rd Peak in our 4 Peak Challenge will be Mweelrea, the highest mountain in Connacht. We will be hiking from the Silver Strand side of the mountain on Saturday, August 6th at 9:30am sharp. (Exact meeting details will be included in the email to sign ups)

The route we will be 10.3km out-and-back trail near Owennadornaun / Bundorragha, County Mayo. Considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 5 hours to complete.

This summit presents a step up in the level of challenge you may expect.
• It is an exposed peak on the South coast and is regularly subject to wind, rain and mist even throughout the summer months.
• The mountain rises from sea level to the summit at over 800 metres, so there is a lot of "up".
• The terrain is steep throughout with damp vegetation and scree (loose rock) presenting risk of a slip or tumble.
• Our trail passes close to high and steep cliffs towards the summit, with an increased risk of accidental fall especially in windy conditions.
• It is in a somewhat isolated area and Mountain Rescue Services can take considerable time to arrive if called upon.
Although the heightened challenge should lead to increased satisfaction, proper planning and preparation is a must if you are to have a successful and enjoyable day.

Full details will be emailed ahead of the event to those who have registered. Please sign up below, and if you want to bring a hiking buddy along, just add their name to your registration.
