Frequently asked questions
What sleeping bag temperature rating do I need for Ireland?
For most Irish camping from spring through autumn, a three-season sleeping bag with a comfort rating around 0°C covers the range of conditions you will encounter. Summer-only bags rated for higher temperatures can feel cold on a typical Irish evening even in July. If you tend to feel cold at night, choose a bag rated lower than the temperatures you expect to camp in.
What is the difference between a self-inflating and foam sleeping mat?
Self-inflating mats open a valve, fill with air automatically and then you top them up with a few breaths. They offer more cushioning than foam and pack down smaller than an airbed, making them the standard choice for most campers. Foam mats are simpler and lighter but bulkier to carry. Both types are rated by R-value, which measures how well the mat insulates you from cold ground: a higher R-value is better for colder conditions.
How do I care for a sleeping bag?
Store sleeping bags uncompressed between trips; keeping them stuffed in a sack long term flattens the fill and reduces warmth. Air the bag after each use before packing it away. Wash only when needed, following the care label, and tumble dry on low with a couple of clean tennis balls to restore the loft. Synthetic fills are more forgiving to wash at home than down.
Can I use a camping sleeping bag for backpacking?
Yes, provided you choose a bag with a low enough pack weight and pack size for the distance you are covering. Heavier bags designed for campsite comfort become a burden on a multi-day route. For backpacking, look at the packed weight and compressed size alongside the temperature rating, and choose a mat with a high R-value that still packs small enough to carry on your back.
