04 The flagship line

The world's bestselling hiking shoe.

You can wear a new Moab straight onto a long hike. That's been the brand's signature claim since 2007, and 25 million pairs sold worldwide say customers agree. The current Moab 3 refines the formula with a softer midsole, a more supportive footbed, and a Vibram TC5+ outsole tuned exclusively for Merrell.

The line covers different builds for different uses: a full-height hiking boot for rough ground, a low-cut walking shoe for warmer days, and the lighter Speed 2 for faster movement. Each comes in men's and women's, with GORE-TEX waterproofing available across the line.

05 The story

Real footwear, built for real ground.

Merrell started in 1981 with a small group of footwear specialists who set out to build hiking boots that earned their keep. The brand quickly built a name for durability and honest comfort.

Since joining Wolverine Worldwide in 1997, the range has expanded well beyond boots, into hiking shoes, trail runners, fast trekkers, and everyday outdoor footwear. The approach has stayed the same: focus on grip, protection, stability, and long-lasting comfort, then test it on real ground.

The result is footwear that holds up across years, not seasons. Whether that's a Sunday walk in the Wicklow Mountains, a long day on the Glendalough loop, or a wet commute to the office.

06 Merrell technology

Three pieces of tech worth understanding.

01

Cushioning

FloatPro™ Foam

FloatPro is Merrell's lightweight midsole foam. It compresses under each step and rebounds quickly, which means less fatigue at the end of a long day. You'll find it on the Moab Speed 2, the Agility Peak 6, and most current Merrell models.

02

Traction

Vibram® Megagrip

Vibram's stickiest rubber compound, engineered for grip on wet rock, loose gravel, and dry trail alike. If you've slipped on slick stone in standard-soled shoes, Megagrip is what you've been missing. Built into the Merrell Agility Peak 6 and Moab Speed 2.

03

Weather

GORE-TEX Membrane

A thin waterproof, breathable membrane sits between the outer leather or mesh and your foot, keeping water out while letting sweat escape. Standard across most Moab and Moab Speed 2 versions. On the Agility Peak 6 GTX, Merrell uses GORE-TEX Invisible Fit, bonded directly to the upper for less bulk.

07 Common questions

Merrell, answered.

What is the difference between the Merrell Moab 3 and the Moab Speed 2?

Both are Merrell hiking shoes built for different paces. The Moab 3 is the traditional hiker: a Vibram TC5+ outsole, a refined footbed, and steady all-day comfort, in a low-cut shoe or a mid-cut boot, both available with GORE-TEX.

The Moab Speed 2 is lighter and more athletic, with FloatPro midsole foam and a sportier last. Choose the Moab 3 for relaxed-pace hiking; choose the Moab Speed 2 if you cover more ground or mix running and walking.

Is the Merrell Agility Peak 6 waterproof?

It depends on the version. The standard Agility Peak 6 is not waterproof, which makes it lighter, more breathable, and quicker to dry — best for summer trail running and dry conditions.

The Agility Peak 6 GORE-TEX (sometimes labelled GTX) uses GORE-TEX Invisible Fit, a membrane bonded directly to the upper, so your feet stay dry while the shoe still feels light. It's the better choice for Irish trails in any season except dry summer. Both versions use the same Vibram Megagrip outsole.

Are Merrell shoes good for wide feet?

Generally, yes — the Moab line in particular. Merrell uses a slightly wider toe box than most outdoor brands, so if your feet feel cramped in Salomon, Scarpa, or similarly narrow lasts, Merrell will usually fit more comfortably without sizing up.

Fit is personal and varies between models: the Moab 3 has the most generous fit, the Agility Peak 6 is more athletic. The best test is to come into one of our stores and try a couple of pairs side by side.

Where can I buy Merrell shoes in Ireland?

53 Degrees North stocks the Merrell range across four stores: Dublin Carrickmines, Dublin Blanchardstown, Cork City Centre, and Arnotts on Henry Street, Dublin city centre.

We also ship across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland via DPD, with delivery in 1 to 2 working days. Standard delivery is €5, free on orders over €100. Free Click & Collect is available from Carrickmines, Blanchardstown, and Cork.

Do Merrell hiking boots need breaking in?

Most Merrell models are designed for out-of-the-box comfort, and the Moab line is famous for it. Many customers wear them straight onto long hikes without issues.

That said, sensible practice for any new boot is to break them in with a few shorter walks first. The full-leather version of the Moab Mid takes slightly longer to soften than the mesh and synthetic versions, but the difference is days, not weeks.

08 Why we stock Merrell

Honestly, the fit. Merrell suits a wider range of feet than most outdoor brands, and that matters when you're helping someone choose footwear for a hike they've been planning for months.

Beyond fit, the construction holds up to Irish weather and Irish trails. The Moab line has been a quiet workhorse for our customers for years — walkers who want a boot that just gets on with the job, no fuss.

The newer Agility Peak runners have brought in a different crowd: trail runners and fast hikers who want grip and cushion without the weight. We've also seen the range cross over into everyday use — the kind of pair you keep by the back door for the school run, the dog walk, the wet commute.

Our staff wear them on the shop floor. If you're not sure which model is right for what you're doing, pop into your nearest store and we'll work through it with you.
