Why Breathability Relies on Water Repellency
Breathable waterproof clothing is designed to keep rain out while letting sweat escape. But if the outer fabric absorbs water, breathability can drop by as much as 70%. That’s when condensation builds up inside, leaving you clammy and uncomfortable.
The secret is maintaining Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric. Over time, DWR naturally wears away and must be renewed with Nikwax TX.Direct® to keep you dry and comfortable.
Waterproof Clothing Needs to Breathe
When you’re active, sweat cools you by evaporating. But if your jacket traps that moisture, you’ll soon overheat and feel wet from the inside. If the outer fabric “wets out,” breathability is reduced even more.
Nikwax TX.Direct® restores water repellency so moisture beads off the fabric surface, while still allowing sweat vapour to pass through. The result: gear that stays waterproof, breathable, and comfortable even in tough conditions.
When to Use Nikwax TX.Direct®
If your rain or snow gear starts soaking up water, first clean it with Nikwax Tech Wash®. For new or recently treated items, this often revives DWR. But once garments are well used, you’ll need to reproof with TX.Direct® after cleaning.
Wash-In vs Spray-On: Which One Do You Need?
- TX.Direct® Wash-In – Best for waterproof gear without wicking linings. The wash-in process treats the whole garment evenly in the machine, giving full DWR coverage inside and out.
- TX.Direct® Spray-On – Ideal for gear with wicking linings. Spray-on treatment protects the outer fabric without affecting the inner lining’s ability to wick away sweat. It also allows targeted reproofing of high-wear areas such as elbows and seams.

How to use

Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On Waterproofer

Hand Application

Important: Shake well before use. Always clean first with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
Protect your work surface from potential overspray.
Spray evenly onto clean, wet fabric from a distance of approximately 15cm.
Wait 5 minutes, then wipe away any surplus product with a damp cloth.

Drying Instructions

Nikwax TX.Direct® treated clothing does not require heat to activate DWR.
Air dry, or tumble dry on a low setting if the care label allows.

To maintain waterproofing, always clean with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use conventional detergents.
