Rip Curl Board Shorts

Board shorts are the one garment in surfing that has to survive being sat on, dragged over wax and soaked for hours. Rip Curl builds them from tough, quick-drying fabric with secure tie waists and flat seams that will not rub, so they hold up to real use in the water rather than a fortnight beside a pool.

Rip Curl board shorts for the water

Everything about a board short is a response to something the sea does to ordinary shorts.

Quick-drying fabric that stays light

Water-shedding technical fabric drains and dries fast, so the shorts do not hang heavy on you through a session or stay cold and clammy on the walk back up the beach.

A secure waist that stays put

A tie waist, often with a hidden fastening, holds firm through duck dives and wipeouts. This is the detail that separates board shorts from anything else you might be tempted to surf in.

Flat seams stop the rubbing

Welded or flat-lying seams remove the ridges that rub the inside of your thighs raw across a long session, which is the injury that ends surf trips more often than anything dramatic.

Cut for movement on a board

A considered leg length and cut let you pop up, crouch and paddle without the fabric binding across your thighs, so the shorts move with you rather than against you.

Frequently asked questions

What length of board short should I choose?

It is mostly preference. A shorter leg gives more freedom for paddling and pop-ups, a longer leg protects more of your thighs from board rub and sun. Most people land somewhere around the knee and adjust from there.

Can I wear board shorts under a wetsuit?

It is not ideal. The seams and the tie waist bunch and rub under neoprene, and the extra fabric makes the suit harder to pull on. A smooth swim brief, bikini or nothing at all is far more comfortable under a suit.

Why do board shorts have no pockets?

Because a pocket fills with water, drags and slows you down, and anything in it is lost the moment you fall. Where board shorts do have a pocket it is small, drains freely and is intended for a key or a bar of wax.

How do I care for board shorts?

Rinse them in fresh water after every session and dry them in the shade. Salt and chlorine both attack the fabric and the elastic, and strong sun fades the print. That routine alone doubles how long they last.
