A fleece is the most versatile warm layer you can own, worn on its own on cool days or under a shell when it turns cold and wet.

Warm, breathable and quick-drying

Fleece traps warmth while still letting moisture escape, and it dries fast if it gets damp, which makes it easy to wear on the move without overheating.

Full-zip, quarter-zip and hooded

Full-zip fleeces layer and vent easily, quarter-zips are lighter and trimmer, and hooded styles add extra warmth. The cut you pick comes down to how you like to layer.

A midlayer or a standalone top

Under a waterproof shell a fleece adds warmth without bulk, while on milder days it works on its own as a light jacket around town or on the trail.

From the classic 100 Glacier upward

The range runs from the long-standing lightweight 100 Glacier to warmer, heavier and textured fleeces, so there is a weight to match how cold you tend to feel.

What weight of fleece should I choose?

A lightweight fleece like the 100 Glacier suits active use and layering, a midweight adds everyday warmth, and a heavier or high-pile fleece is best for standing around in the cold. Lighter fleeces layer better under a shell.

How do I wash a fleece?

Wash on a cool, gentle cycle with ordinary detergent and skip fabric softener, which clogs the fibres and reduces warmth. Air dry or tumble on low, and washing it inside out helps keep the surface from pilling.

Do The North Face fleeces run true to size?

They are generally a regular fit and true to size. If you plan to layer one under a shell your usual size is normally right, so size up only if you want to wear thick layers underneath.

Do fleeces keep the wind out?

A standard fleece is warm and breathable but lets wind through, so on an exposed, breezy day you will want a windproof or waterproof layer over the top. Some fleeces add a wind-resistant membrane or a tighter weave for more protection on their own. For layering, that breathability is actually the point, since it lets moisture escape when you wear one under a shell.
