Waterproof The North Face footwear for Irish weather

A waterproof build is one of the most useful things in footwear here, and The North Face fits one across its hiking and winter lines.

GORE-TEX keeps the wet out

A GORE-TEX membrane blocks rain and puddles while letting sweat vapour escape, so feet stay drier without overheating.

Waterproofing across the range

From the Hedgehog and Offtrail Hike to the Fastpack shoe and winter boots, the waterproof line covers hiking, trails and cold-weather wear.

Grip to match the wet

Wet ground is slippery ground, so these pair their waterproofing with grippy outsoles for surer footing on mud and wet rock.

Care keeps it working

Cleaning off dirt and refreshing the outer with a waterproofing treatment keeps the membrane shedding water for longer.

Frequently asked questions

How does GORE-TEX keep feet dry?

A GORE-TEX membrane sits inside the shoe or boot, blocking rain and puddles from getting in while letting some sweat vapour escape, so feet stay dry without overheating.

Is waterproof footwear worth it in Ireland?

For most of the year, yes. A waterproof build keeps feet dry through the showers, mud and wet grass that come with hiking and walking here. In very warm, dry spells a non-waterproof shoe breathes and dries faster.

How do I care for waterproof footwear?

Brush off dirt, let boots dry naturally away from direct heat, and refresh the outer with a waterproofing treatment when water stops beading. Keeping the uppers clean helps the membrane keep working.

Do waterproof shoes get hot in warmer weather?

A waterproof membrane is a little less breathable than a mesh shoe, so on a hot, dry summer day feet can feel warmer, which is the trade-off for staying dry the rest of the year. For most of the Irish calendar the dryness is worth it, but if you mainly walk in dry, warm conditions a non-membrane shoe breathes better. Water can also still come in over the collar in deep puddles, however dry the membrane keeps you.
