Frequently asked questions
How do I reproof a waterproof jacket?
Wash it with a technical cleaner rather than ordinary detergent, then apply a wash-in or spray-on waterproofing treatment when water stops beading on the surface. A warm tumble dry or cool iron helps reactivate the water-repellent finish.
Should I size up to fit layers underneath?
Most of these jackets are cut with room for a midlayer, so try your normal size first. Size up only if you plan to wear thick insulation underneath or prefer a roomier fit.
What is the difference between a waterproof and a water-resistant jacket?
A waterproof jacket has a sealed membrane and taped seams to keep out sustained rain. A water-resistant or windproof jacket sheds light showers but wets through in heavy rain. Each product page states whether a jacket is fully waterproof.
What makes the pricier shells worth the extra?
More technical jackets add fully taped seams, pit zips for venting, adjustable helmet-compatible hoods and tougher, more breathable membranes like FUTURELIGHT or GORE-TEX, which matter on long mountain days. For everyday showers a simpler DryVent jacket does the job well and costs less. The right choice comes down to how long and how exposed your days out tend to be.
