How a sleeping mat works in a complete sleep system

A sleeping mat places an insulating barrier between your body and the ground, preventing conductive heat loss to the earth beneath you. This is a separate insulation path from the sleeping bag, which handles convective and radiative heat loss from the air around you. A sleep system without a mat loses heat through the floor faster than the bag can compensate — the combination of mat and bag addresses both. A basic closed-cell EVA mat handles the ground insulation requirement for most summer campsite use.

Sleeping mat thickness and R-value for campsite and cool conditions

For summer campsite camping, a 1.5 to 2.5cm EVA mat provides enough cushioning on most campsite grass. For cooler conditions or rocky ground, a thicker self-inflating mat from 3.8cm upward gives better comfort and a higher R-value to insulate from the ground. R-value measures thermal resistance — a higher R-value means more insulation from the ground. For Irish summer campsite use, a mat with an R-value of 1 to 2 is adequate; for shoulder season or higher altitude camping, aim for R-3 or above.
