Patagonia Waterproof Down Jackets
Frequently asked questions
What makes a down jacket waterproof?
The down is sealed inside a waterproof, breathable H2No shell with fully taped seams, so rain cannot reach the insulation. That keeps the down lofted and warm even in sustained wet weather, unlike a standard down jacket whose shell only resists light showers.
When should I choose waterproof down over a regular down jacket?
Choose waterproof down when you will be out in cold and wet conditions at the same time, such as an Irish winter day. A regular down jacket is lighter and better for dry cold or for layering under a separate shell.
How do I care for a waterproof down jacket?
Use a down-specific cleaner on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low with a couple of dryer balls to restore loft and make sure it is fully dry. Reproof the outer shell with a suitable treatment when water stops beading on the surface.
How warm are Patagonia waterproof down jackets?
These jackets pair genuinely warm down fill with a waterproof shell, so they hold a lot of heat for their weight in cold, wet conditions where ordinary down would struggle. The down lofts to trap warm air while the outer keeps rain and snow off, which protects that warmth when the weather turns. For very active days you may run warm, so they suit slower, colder outings and standing around in the cold more than high-output efforts.
