Why Down Loses Its Warmth When WetDown is prized for being light, compressible and incredibly warm. It works by trapping air between its fine filaments, which your body heat then warms to create insulation.But when down gets wet, the filaments clump together. Loft is lost, meaning the down can’t trap air effectively. Water also conducts heat up to 25 times faster than air, so once wet, down rapidly loses its insulating power. Treating your gear with Nikwax Down Proof™ restores DWR to both the outer fabric and the down fill, helping it resist water while maintaining loft, warmth and comfort.When to Use Nikwax Down Proof™If your down jacket or sleeping bag starts absorbing water, first clean it with Nikwax Down Wash.Direct®. For newer or recently treated gear, this may be enough to revive the DWR. But after extended use, you’ll need to reproof with Nikwax Down Proof™ (applied after cleaning with Down Wash.Direct®).
