Why Down Loses Its Warmth When WetDown is prized for being light, compressible and incredibly warm. It works by trapping air between its fine filaments, which your body heat then warms to create insulation. But when down gets wet, the filaments clump together. Loft is lost, meaning the down can’t trap air effectively. Water also conducts heat up to 25 times faster than air, so once wet, down rapidly loses its insulating power. Wet down also becomes heavier, less breathable and leaves you feeling cold, damp and uncomfortable. Why Water Repellency MattersTo keep down gear performing, you need to stop it from absorbing moisture. Both the outer fabric and the down fill require Durable Water Repellency (DWR) to stay warm and breathable. Over time, this DWR coating wears off through use and washing, and must be renewed with Nikwax Down Proof™.Down Is Best in Cold, Dry ConditionsDown’s unique ability to deliver maximum warmth with minimum bulk makes it ideal for jackets, gilets and sleeping bags in cold, dry weather. But rain, snow or even condensation from sweat will cause it to collapse and lose insulation. Treating your gear with Nikwax Down Proof™ restores DWR to both the outer fabric and the down fill, helping it resist water while maintaining loft, warmth and comfort. When to Use Nikwax Down Proof™If your down jacket or sleeping bag starts absorbing water, first clean it with Nikwax Down Wash.Direct®. For newer or recently treated gear, this may be enough to revive the DWR. But after extended use, you’ll need to reproof with Nikwax Down Proof™ (applied after cleaning with Down Wash.Direct®). This treatment restores repellency to both the shell and the down itself. Why Choose Nikwax Down Proof™Specifically designed for down-filled gear.
Adds DWR to both fabric and down filaments.
Maintains loft and insulation instead of flattening the down.
Water-based, PFC-free and non-flammablesafer for you and the environment.
Prolongs the life of your gear while keeping it breathable and comfortable.
How Nikwax Down Proof™ WorksNikwax Down Proof™ coats each filament and fabric fibre with a flexible, water-repellent treatment. This allows sweat vapour to escape while blocking rain and condensation. The resultdown that stays lofty, light, warm and protective even in damp conditions.

About the brand

Nikwax

Nikwax is a British brand and the trusted name in waterproofing and aftercare since 1977, when founder Nick Brown mixed his first batch of waterproofing wax for his leather walking boots. It has stayed focused on helping outdoor gear perform better and last longer ever since.

Its water-based, PFC-free treatments restore and improve the waterproofing of jackets, boots, tents and equipment while maintaining breathability, all without harming the environment. In fact, Nikwax is the only established waterproofing aftercare brand never to have used PFCs. From wash-in solutions to easy sprays, it is a simple, effective part of any outdoor kit.
