Why Breathability Relies on Water Repellency
Waterproof jackets and trousers are designed to keep rain out while letting sweat escape. But once the outer fabric begins to soak up water, breathability can drop by as much as 70%. That’s when you start feeling clammy inside your gear. The solution is to maintain the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) finish on the fabric. Over time, DWR naturally wears away and needs to be renewed with Nikwax TX.Direct®.
Why Breathable Fabrics Still Get Wet Inside
When you’re active outdoors, sweat keeps you cool by evaporating. If your waterproof gear can’t let moisture vapour pass through, sweat condenses inside, leaving you damp even without rain. And if the outer fabric “wets out” by absorbing water, breathability is reduced even further. Nikwax TX.Direct® restores the DWR finish, stopping water from soaking in while allowing sweat vapour to escape.
When to Use Nikwax TX.Direct®
If your rain gear has started soaking up water, start by cleaning it with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Often, a good clean is enough to revive the DWR, especially if the garment is new or recently reproofed. But when cleaning alone no longer restores beading on the surface, it’s time to re-waterproof with TX.Direct® after washing with Tech Wash.
Cleaning Is Just as Important as Reproofing
Household detergents leave behind residues that attract water and mask DWR. Dirt itself also weakens repellency. That’s why you should always clean with Nikwax Tech Wash® before reproofing. Regular cleaning enhances performance and extends the life of your waterproof gear.

How to use

Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In Waterproofer

Machine Wash

Shake bottle before use.
Do not use conventional detergents.
Always clean first with Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle.
Do not dry before waterproofing.
Remove any detergent build-up from the detergent drawer.
Place a maximum of 2 clean garments in the washing machine.
Add 100ml of TX.Direct® per garment.
Select a 30°C synthetic cycle with a slow spin.
Drying: Air dry, or tumble dry on low heat if the care label allows.

To maintain waterproofing, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents.

Hand Wash

Wear gloves.
Immerse 1 clean garment in 7.5L of hand-hot water in a bowl or sink.
Add 100ml of TX.Direct®.
Agitate to mix, soak for 5 minutes, then agitate thoroughly.
Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear.
Drying: Air dry, or tumble dry on low heat if the care label allows.
