The comfort of leather footwear relies on two things: support and breathability. Leather naturally supports your feet thanks to its structure and tanning agents. But when leather absorbs water, those tanning agents are lost, causing the leather to stiffen and lose support. At the same time, wet leather can’t breathe properly, which means sweaty, damp feet.
That’s why it’s essential to maintain the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your footwear. Over time, DWR wears off and needs to be renewed with Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™.
Why Regular Leather Care Matters
Leather is tough, breathable and long-lasting, which makes it ideal for boots and walking shoes. During production, tanning agents are added to help preserve its structure and prevent microbial growth. If leather wets out, not only does breathability drop, but tanning agents are lost. Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ restores DWR, prevents water absorption, and helps replenish tanning agents without over-softening the leather. This keeps your boots strong, supportive and breathable for longer.
When to Use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™
If your leather footwear starts soaking up water, first clean it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. For newer or recently treated boots, cleaning alone may revive the DWR. But once your footwear is well worn, you’ll need to re-waterproof with Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ to restore full protection.
Cleaning Is Just as Important as Waterproofing
Dirt and ordinary detergents both harm Durable Water Repellency. Detergents leave behind water-attracting residues, while dirt itself weakens waterproofing. That’s why it’s important to always use Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™ before reproofing. Regular cleaning keeps your boots breathing and ensures the wax treatment bonds effectively.

How to use

Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather Sponge-On Waterproofer

Hand Application

Massage tube well before use.
For use on smooth leather only. Do not apply to nubuck or suede.
Always clean first using Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
Rub the wax into clean leather using the sponge applicator or your fingers, paying close attention to seams.
After 2 minutes, remove any excess with a damp cloth and buff to a shine.
Item will be water-repellent immediately, but for best results allow to dry naturally before use.

Note: May darken leather. Test on a hidden area first. Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ will convert nubuck to a smooth, waxy finish.

Drying Instructions

Always allow footwear to dry naturally at room temperature.
Stuff paper into the toes to absorb excess moisture, replacing it when wet.
Keep footwear away from direct heat sources like fires or radiators — drying too quickly can crack leather and damage bonded soles.
