M Select DRY and GORE-TEX technologies

The waterproof range uses two main membrane systems. M Select DRY is Merrell's proprietary waterproof-breathable lining, applied across the majority of the range. It keeps water out while allowing vapour to pass through, maintaining reasonable breathability for active use. GORE-TEX is available on higher-tier models and is the industry reference for breathable waterproofing, typically offering better moisture management during high-output activity. For most day-hiking and trail walking, M Select DRY performs well; GORE-TEX is the step up for longer or more demanding conditions.

The waterproof range covers three broad silhouettes. Waterproof hiking boots provide ankle support and a stiffer midsole for load-carrying and rough terrain. Waterproof trail shoes offer a lower-cut, lighter build suited to faster-moving trail use without a heavy pack. Waterproof walking shoes cover everyday outdoor use and lighter trail work where a full boot would be excessive. All three silhouettes pair the relevant membrane with outsoles designed for grip on wet ground.

Vibram outsoles and wet-ground grip

Waterproof membrane alone does not determine how a boot performs in wet conditions. Across the Merrell waterproof range, Vibram TC5+ and M Select GRIP compounds provide the underfoot traction needed on wet rock, rooted trail, and boggy ground. The combination of a sealed upper and a high-grip outsole is what makes waterproof Merrell footwear functional in the kind of mixed wet terrain that defines hillwalking and trail use in Ireland for most of the year.

Waterproof versus non-waterproof

Waterproof footwear is not automatically the better choice. In warm and dry conditions, waterproof linings trap heat and reduce breathability, and non-waterproof mesh uppers dry faster after water crossings. Waterproof is the right choice for autumn, winter, and spring use; for routes through boggy or exposed terrain; and for any outing where prolonged wet conditions are likely. In summer on drier routes, the non-waterproof version of the same boot often performs better. Most waterproof Merrell models are available alongside a non-waterproof mesh equivalent for exactly this reason.
