Merrell Moab

The Moab range uses a combination of mesh and pigskin leather uppers that require less break-in time than full leather boots, but a short running-in period is still recommended before a long day on the hill. Wear them on shorter walks first, gradually increasing distance. Any pressure points around the ankle collar or across the toe box will soften within the first several uses. Wearing the same socks you plan to hike in during the break-in period helps identify fit issues before they become problems on the trail.

The standard Moab range is built on a traditional hiking last with Vibram TC5+ outsole, prioritising durability and trail stability for day hiking and backpacking. The Moab Speed uses a FloatPro foam midsole and a more aggressive Vibram Megagrip outsole, bringing it closer to fast-hiking and light trail running territory. The Speed is lighter and more responsive but offers less structured support under load. The standard Moab suits deliberate trail use and carrying a pack; the Speed suits faster-moving hikers covering technical ground without heavy kit.

With regular weekend use, Merrell Moab boots typically last three to five seasons before the midsole cushioning degrades or outsole grip diminishes noticeably. Heavy or daily use shortens this. The Vibram TC5+ outsole is durable on mixed trail, so midsole compression is usually what ends a boot's working life before the outsole wears out. Cleaning the uppers after each outing and conditioning the leather sections regularly prolongs both structural integrity and water resistance.

The waterproof Moab models handle wet winter conditions on low and mid-level routes well. The Vibram TC5+ outsoles perform on firm compacted ground and light snow. For routes involving ice, hard-packed snow, or conditions requiring crampons, a stiffer crampon-compatible boot is necessary; the Moab sole is too flexible to accept most crampon systems safely. For winter walking on Irish mountain terrain below the snowline, the waterproof mid or high cut Moab is a capable and practical choice.

After each outing, brush off mud and rinse with cold water. Allow to air dry at room temperature away from direct heat, which can crack the leather and degrade the waterproof membrane. Once dry, apply a wax-based or beeswax conditioner to the leather sections to maintain flexibility and water resistance. Re-treat with a DWR spray periodically to restore factory water repellency on both leather and mesh panels. Avoid silicone-based products on models with breathable membranes, as they can reduce breathability over time.
