Frequently asked questions
Can Merrell walking shoes be used for hillwalking?
Merrell walking shoes are well-suited to moderate hillwalking, including forest trails, coastal paths, and lower mountain ground where the terrain is varied but not technical. Models in the Moab range are built for more demanding surfaces and handle loose, wet, and uneven ground well. For steep ascents, loose scree, or routes that require firm ankle support, a dedicated mid or high hiking boot is the better choice.
Do Merrell walking shoes come in wide fit?
Merrell does not offer a dedicated wide-fit range across all styles, but many walking shoe silhouettes have a medium-to-roomy toe box that suits wider feet without needing to size up. Last shape varies across models, so fit is not consistent across the range. Trying them in store is the most reliable way to assess this, as what works for one style may not carry over to another.
What is the difference between Merrell walking shoes and hiking boots?
Merrell walking shoes are lower-cut and lighter than hiking boots, which makes them more comfortable for all-day wear but means they offer less ankle support on rough or uneven terrain. They suit trail walking, light hillwalking, and mixed-surface use. For longer mountain days, steep descents, or walking with a heavy pack, a mid or high hiking boot provides considerably more support and stability.
How long do Merrell walking shoes last?
With regular trail and mixed-surface use, Merrell walking shoes typically last between 500 and 800 kilometres before midsole cushioning noticeably degrades, even when the outsole still looks serviceable. Vibram and M Select GRIP outsoles hold up well on hard surfaces. Rotating between two pairs and letting shoes dry fully between uses extends the lifespan noticeably.
How do I clean Merrell walking shoes?
Clean Merrell walking shoes with a soft brush and cold water to remove mud and trail debris after each use. Avoid machine washing, which can degrade midsole bonding and compromise waterproof membranes. For waterproof models, reapply a DWR (durable water repellent) spray once water beading visibly degrades. Air dry naturally, away from direct heat, which can warp the midsole.
