O'Neill Wetsuit Boots

Cold water finds your feet first, and it is the reason people cut sessions short far more often than they admit. Neoprene boots keep your feet warm enough to stay in, and put a tough, grippy sole between you and whatever the shoreline is made of. The range runs from thin reef boots for warm water and sharp rock to thick winter boots for genuinely cold swims.

O'Neill wetsuit boots for cold water and rocky entries

Feet lose heat fast and take a beating on the way in and out, so a good boot buys you both warmth and confidence over rough ground.

Thickness sets how long you can stay in

Boot neoprene is measured in millimetres, and the jump from a thin 2mm to a thick 7mm is the difference between a warm summer session and a long winter swim. Colder water and longer stays both point you towards more thickness.

Grippy soles protect against rock and reef

A moulded, textured sole grips wet rock and slipway concrete and shields the sole of your foot from barnacles, stones and reef, which is where most out-of-the-water injuries actually happen.

Round toe and split toe suit different feet

Round toe boots are warmer and simpler to pull on. Split toe designs separate the big toe, which many people find gives a better connection to a board and stops the boot twisting underfoot.

Sizes for adults and children

The range covers unisex adult sizing alongside dedicated youth boots, so children in the water get the same warmth and underfoot protection rather than making do with sandals.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness of wetsuit boot do I need?

For summer and warmer water, a 2mm or 3mm reef boot gives protection and a little warmth. For year-round Irish water, 5mm is the reliable choice. For winter swimming and long cold sessions, 7mm boots make the biggest difference of any accessory you can buy.

How should wetsuit boots fit?

Snug, like a firm sock, with your toes just reaching the end and no air gaps around the ankle. Loose boots let cold water flush in and out, which is what makes feet cold. They will feel tight when dry and ease slightly once wet.

Do I wear socks under wetsuit boots?

Generally no. A wetsuit boot works by trapping a thin layer of water that your body warms, and a sock gets in the way of that. If your feet run very cold, a dedicated neoprene sock under a slightly larger boot is the usual answer.

What is the difference between reef boots and wetsuit boots?

Reef boots are thin, low-cut and built mainly to protect your feet from sharp ground in warm water. Wetsuit boots are thicker and higher on the ankle, built primarily for warmth. Thin reef styles will not keep you warm in cold water.
