O'Neill Wetsuit Care

A wetsuit that is rinsed and dried properly lasts years longer than one that lives in the boot of a car. Dedicated wetsuit cleaner lifts out the salt, chlorine and bacteria that plain water leaves behind, keeping the neoprene soft and the suit fresh. It is a few minutes of effort that protects a serious piece of kit.

O'Neill wetsuit cleaner and care

Neoprene is durable but not indestructible, and most wetsuits are retired long before they need to be, undone by salt, sunlight and being left damp.

Cleaner does what a rinse cannot

Fresh water washes off the worst of the salt, but a dedicated wetsuit cleaner also lifts out the residues and bacteria that cause a suit to smell and the neoprene to stiffen over time.

Keeps neoprene soft and stretchy

Salt crystals and chlorine attack the flexibility of neoprene and the glue in the seams. Cleaning them out keeps the suit stretching the way it should, which is what makes it comfortable and keeps it warm.

Deals with the smell before it sets in

A suit that has been left damp develops a smell that is very hard to shift. Regular cleaning stops the bacteria responsible from taking hold, which is far easier than trying to rescue a suit that has already turned.

A few minutes that adds years

Rinse, clean, and hang the suit to dry on a wide hanger out of direct sun. That short routine after each use does more to extend the life of a wetsuit than anything else you can do.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just rinse a wetsuit with fresh water?

A rinse removes surface salt and sand, which is a good start and better than nothing. It does not remove the bacteria and residues held in the neoprene, which are what cause the smell and, over time, stiffen the fabric and seams.

How often should I use a wetsuit cleaner?

Rinse in fresh water after every single use. Use a dedicated cleaner every few sessions, and always after a long trip, a period of heavy use or any time the suit has been left damp for longer than you would like to admit.

Can I put a wetsuit in the washing machine?

No. A machine wash damages the neoprene and the seams, and the heat and agitation will shorten the life of the suit considerably. Clean it by hand in cool water with a product made for wetsuits.

How should I dry and store a wetsuit?

Hang it inside out on a wide hanger, out of direct sunlight, until the inside is dry, then turn it and dry the outside. Store it hanging or loosely folded rather than creased, and never leave it in a warm car or a sealed bag.
