A footprint is not essential but it is worth using. It protects the tent floor from abrasion, reduces moisture coming through the base on damp pitches, and extends the lifespan of the groundsheet significantly. The MSR Universal Footprint fits most MSR tents and can be trimmed to size. On a tent costing several hundred euros, a footprint is an inexpensive way to protect the investment.

Groundhog stakes use a Y-beam cross-section in hard-anodised aluminium that bites into the ground and resists rotation under load. Standard wire or skewer pegs pull out easily in soft, wet or boggy ground. In Irish conditions, Groundhog stakes hold where others do not. They drive cleanly with a rock or mallet, extract without bending, and are light enough that carrying a full set adds almost nothing to your pack weight.

Most three-season tents need 6 to 8 pegs for the fly and footprint combined. The MSR Mini-Groundhog Stake Kit (6 stakes) is enough for a solo tent or as a set of spares. The full Groundhog Stake Kit covers a two-person tent or replaces all factory pegs at once. Carrying a couple of extras on longer trips is always a good idea.

Yes. The Universal Footprint is a rectangular groundsheet that can be cut or folded to fit any tent floor. It works with any brand of tent, not just MSR. The material is the same durable polyethylene used on MSR's own custom footprints, so it provides the same level of floor protection regardless of what tent you pitch above it.
