What is Omni-Shade?

Omni-Shade is Columbia's sun-protection fabric, rated by UPF, usually from UPF 30 to UPF 50, which blocks the large majority of the sun's UV. Unlike sunscreen it does not wear off or need reapplying, so a long-sleeve Omni-Shade shirt gives reliable all-day cover for your arms, shoulders and back on exposed trails, open water or holiday. The higher the UPF number, the more UV it blocks, and the rating is listed on each product that offers it.

Are Columbia hiking shirts good for hot weather?

Very much so, that is what they are built for. The hiking shirts use light, quick-drying fabric that wicks sweat off the skin, and many add a vented mesh back and roll-up sleeves with tabs to move air when it is warm. Several also carry Omni-Freeze sweat-activated cooling, which feels cool against damp skin, alongside Omni-Shade sun protection. That mix makes a long-sleeve version genuinely more comfortable than a bare tee on a hot, exposed day, because it shades and cools rather than trapping heat.

Do Columbia shirts run true to size?

How do I wash a Columbia hiking shirt?

Wash on a cool, gentle cycle with ordinary detergent and skip the fabric softener, which coats technical fabric and reduces both its wicking and its quick drying. These shirts dry very fast on a line or airer, so there is rarely any need for a tumble dryer, and lower heat is kinder to the fabric and any print. The Omni-Shade sun protection is built into the fibres rather than added as a coating, so normal washing does not wear it off.
