Warm enough for lift-served skiing in real cold, thanks to synthetic insulation paired with Omni-Heat, the reflective dotted lining that bounces your body heat back without adding bulk. How warm depends on the model: a heavily insulated jacket suits resort days spent riding lifts and standing in cold wind, while a lighter Omni-Heat shell is better if you run hot or want to add your own midlayer. If you feel the cold on chairlifts, size up a touch so a fleece fits underneath.

The dedicated ski jackets do. Look for a powder skirt that seals at the waist to keep snow out after a fall, a helmet-compatible hood, a goggle or lift-pass pocket, and on the more technical models a wrist gaiter and RECCO reflector. Usually not by much. Columbia cuts its ski jackets with room for a baselayer and a midlayer already built in, so most people take their normal size and still fit a fleece underneath. Only size up if you plan to wear a thick insulated midlayer or like a relaxed fit, and bear in mind a jacket that is too big lets warm air escape at the hem and cuffs.
