Are windbreakers waterproof?
No, and it is worth being clear before you buy. A windbreaker blocks wind and its water-repellent finish beads off a light shower, but it is not seam-sealed and will wet through in steady or heavy rain. Think of it as a wind layer that copes with the odd shower, not a stand-in for a proper waterproof. If you need to stay dry in sustained Irish rain, choose an Omni-Tech waterproof instead.
When should I choose a windbreaker over a waterproof?
Choose a windbreaker for dry, breezy or lightly showery days, and especially for fast-moving activity like running, cycling or quick hikes where a full waterproof would leave you clammy. It breathes far better and weighs almost nothing, so it is the layer you will actually carry and use day to day. Save the waterproof for when steady rain is genuinely likely, and plenty of people keep both and pick by the forecast.
Can I pack a windbreaker away easily?
Yes, that is much of the point. Most Columbia windbreakers are very light and fold down into a pocket or their own small pouch, so one lives easily in a daypack, a jersey pocket or even a large coat pocket. That makes it the just-in-case layer you bring for a cool breeze on a summit or an exposed stretch, without noticing the weight until you need it.
Will a Columbia windbreaker keep me warm?
A windbreaker adds warmth by cutting the wind rather than by insulating, and that effect is bigger than people expect, since wind is what strips heat from your body on an exposed day. Worn over a baselayer or a light fleece it makes a real difference to how warm you feel, but on its own in still, cold air it does little, because there is no insulation in the fabric. On cold days treat it as the outer layer over a warm midlayer rather than as a jacket in its own right.
