Rip Curl Rash Vests

A rash vest is the piece you only appreciate on the day you forgot it. It sits close to the skin, stops a board or a wetsuit rubbing you raw, and blocks the sun that bounces hardest off the water. Light, quick to dry and worn far more often than most people expect when they buy one.

Rip Curl rash vests and rashguards

Rash vests solve two problems at once, and both of them are problems you feel only after the fact.

Stops board rub and chafing

The original purpose, and still the main one. A smooth close layer between skin and board, or between skin and neoprene, prevents the rubbing that turns a good session into a sore evening.

UPF fabric handles reflected sun

The water throws UV back up at you, which is why shoulders and upper backs burn so readily. A UPF-rated top covers exactly those areas and keeps working when sunscreen has long since washed off.

Quick-drying and light on the skin

Stretchy technical fabric sheds water fast, so you are not left in something cold and clinging between sessions or on the walk back to the car.

Short sleeve, long sleeve and under the suit

Short sleeve versions maximise movement on hot days, long sleeve versions cover more skin, and both work worn under a wetsuit to cut chafing and make the suit easier to get into.

Frequently asked questions

What does a rash vest actually do?

Two jobs. It stops your skin rubbing against a board or the inside of a wetsuit, and it blocks much of the UV reflecting off the water. Plenty of people wear one purely for the sun protection, with no board involved.

Should a rash vest be tight?

Yes, close to the skin. A loose rash vest drags in the water, rides up and stops doing its job. It should feel snug while still letting you breathe deeply and rotate your shoulders through a full paddle stroke.

Can I wear a rash vest under a wetsuit?

Yes, and it makes the suit noticeably more pleasant. It reduces rubbing at the neck and underarms and helps the suit slide on. Choose a close-fitting one so it does not bunch up underneath.

Do rash vests keep you warm?

Barely. A rash vest is a sun and rub layer rather than an insulating one. It takes the edge off a breeze but will not keep you warm in cold water. For warmth you need neoprene, whether a springsuit or a full wetsuit.
