A volley is a shorter, looser short with an elasticated drawcord waist, borrowed from beach volleyball. It is comfortable, easy to swim in and quick to dry, which makes it the natural choice for a day that drifts between sand and water.

Can I swim in casual shorts?

Volley styles handle it happily and dry quickly. Chino and walkshort styles in cotton will get heavy and take a long time to dry, so if swimming is on the cards, reach for a volley or a proper board short.

How should shorts fit?
